BLACK CABINETRY

In a Manhattan apartment, the existing kitchen cabinets were painted Benjamin Moore Air in Black. “I needed it to seem less boring and more like an intelligent butler’s pantry,” designer Lilly Bunn says. The Roman shade is in Holland & Sherry’s Belfour linen.

SATURATED COLOR

Fine Paints of Europe lacquer in Bamboo Leaf the cupboards in this New York flat by Miles Redd, as was the roller shade by Manhattan Shade & Glass. Redd says, “We pumped up the colour merely a scootch and lacquered it to give it life.” Even the Sub-Zero refrigerator is painted green.

MATCHING TRIM

In a 295-square foot Brooklyn studio apartment the kitchen corner, done in green and white to blend in, gets a helping with grosgrain ribbon trim along with a painted plaid backsplash of charm.

METALLIC SHEEN

Her New York City kitchen could possibly be around the modest side, but designer Sheila Bridges didn’t let that cramp her style. An elegant silvery-blue wallpaper adds a small space and some unexpected excitement.

MIRRORED CABINETS

Antiqued mirrored glass on cabinet doors enlarges the little kitchen in a Brooklyn townhouse decorated by Jonathan Berger. Granite countertops and backsplash in Imperial White are from E. Stone.

POT RACK

Pans that are bulky can take up valuable real-estate, so Katie Ridder installed the Industrial pot rack of Urban Archaeology in a Greenwich Village duplex. The refined barstools from Cherner Chair Company are a 1958 layout by Norman Cherner and are cushioned in MK Collection’s Summer Strié.

Light and Bright

This kitchen packs every homeowner’s most-desired features into a small space: a storage-filled island with pendant lights, double wall ovens, chairs, as well as a beautiful mosaic backsplash. Dark maple trimming and light English sycamore play nicely making an equilibrium that is stunning but natural. Open shelving and recessed lighting over the cabinets create a perfect house for collectibles.

TALL TABLE

Chris Barrett located the tall 1860s Czech table, with beautifully turned legs at J.F. Chen. It works flawlessly in a space that was “too small to get a dining table and too big to get nothing,” Barrett says, functioning as both breakfast island and buffet for dining on the terrace outside the French doors.
